Questions & Answers
Q - How many spotters are used for each race? How are they picked? What experience must they have?
Rich
A - We have one spotter, Andy Dunlap. A Spotter is a critical part of the team. We would only consider a spotter that has many years of racing experience.
Q - With the races in the CTS being so far apart, how do you keep your focus?
Barbara
A - We use the time off to test at different tracks. This helps me to stay focused. It also helps the team fine tune our setups for upcoming racings.
Q - Who do you look up to most in your racing career and why?
Andra
A - Joy Fair - Mr. Fair is an outstanding racecar driver, and an even better person. I don't think there is even a word in the dictionary that could describe how good and decent he is.
Q - My husband met you when you were at Antique Auto (Brookville Roadster) in Brookville, Oh, a while back. I was wondering if you were going to be in the area any time this year. I have a few friends who follow you on the truck series (myself included), and they would like to meet you.
Lisa
A - I will definitely be close to Brookville this year. I usually make several trips to Wellings Toyota in Indiana.
Q - I still race karts at Adams (I'm one of the older guys) and saw a pic of you on the site in a "Bug" kart. Was that pic at Adams?
Cliff
A - No, that picture was taken at Ann Arbor Raceway in Michigan.
Q - Your fans at Nashville Speedway USA (particularly the one up in scoring) would like to know if you'll be wheeling Earl's ride in any Late Model shows. You sure do make things interesting when you make an appearance, and it's neat to see you running #70 again.
James
A - If I can work it into my schedule, you will definitely see me racing Earl Owen's car at Nashville.
Q - Your photo page shows your family at Illiana in '79--was that for the Bettenhausen Memorial? I'm wondering because that was the first one I missed (USMC boot camp--I missed the USAC Fair Stock 200 and the Governor's Cup at Milwaukee too.) You sure were a terror in USAC in '79 and '80. Seemed like you were winning everything in sight. I was a fan then and still am to this day, and I'm thrilled you're doing so well in what I think is the most competitive series NASCAR offers. Keep it up!
James
A - I am 95% sure that it was.
Q - Hey Joe, what's your favorite Mexican store in Michigan?
Andra
A - That would be the Mexican Fiesta!
Q - How did it feel being the first in the truck series to use the Hans System and did it restrict you in any way?
A - I am very thankful to all the people who helped get the Hans Device for me. As far as hindering my driving, I never even knew it was on. In the 80's I wore a device for neck support, so I have dealt with limited head movement in the past.
The Hans Device does limit the amount a driver can move his head. But over the last decade, drivers have come to rely heavily on spotters. We use spotters as our second (and sometimes third) set of eyes. Spotters tell us when we have cleared a car we are passing, where the wreck is up ahead, etc. Spotters are positioned at strategic locations around the track, and have a much better view of the track (and the race as a whole) than do the drivers.
